What moves the price
Lawn size first, then grass length and thickness, slope, and access — a mower that has to come through a narrow side gate adds time to every visit. Whether clippings are taken away matters too. Long, thick or wet grass needs more passes, and a badly overgrown lawn may need an initial heavy cut plus a follow-up mow a week later, so it's quoted separately from routine work.

How often a Sydney lawn needs mowing
More often than most people think in spring, and less often than most people think in winter.
Through the growing season — roughly September to March out here — a fortnightly cut suits most lawns, and Kikuyu on a good stretch of warm wet weather can want it weekly. Over winter, growth slows enough that three-weekly or monthly is plenty. Setting one fixed frequency for the whole year means either paying for cuts you don't need or watching it get away from you every spring.
The one-third rule
Never take off more than about a third of the leaf in a single cut. Grass feeds itself through its leaf, so scalping it removes the engine and the lawn goes pale and stressed for weeks afterwards — exactly when you wanted it looking good. On a lawn that's got long, two cuts a few days apart beats one brutal one every time.
Cutting height
Higher is usually better through a Western Sydney summer. Longer leaf shades the soil, holds moisture and stops weeds germinating in the gaps. Buffalo in particular hates being cut short. The neat close-cropped look works on a cool-climate lawn, not on warm-season grasses in this heat.
Clippings on or off
On a lawn cut regularly, leaving fine clippings returns nutrients and does the grass good. On a lawn that has got long, the clippings come off — thick clumps left sitting will smother and yellow the grass underneath within days.
